A visitor's experience of Yggdrasil Igloo in Höör, Skåne

An English countryside getaway by a Swedish lakeside

If you love the calm and quiet of the countryside, but still prefer a high level of comfort and staying close to a wide variety of experiences, Yggdrasil Igloo in Skåne is the place for you.

By a sparkling lakeside in Höör, just over 1 hour from Copenhagen or a mere 45 minutes from Malmö, lies a retreat for those yearning for a tranquil countryside lifestyle. The unique accommodation, a high-tech and sustainable glass igloo, floats on the glistening waters of Ringsjön, offering the seclusion and tranquility of camping with all the services and luxury of a quaint inn or bed and breakfast.

I must admit, I felt strained when leaving Copenhagen after weeks filled with deadlines and social commitments, and so a weekend away from the city seemed like the perfect remedy. And true enough, a quiet calm washed over me almost immediately when we pulled up at a farmhouse in Skåne and checked in with our gracious host, Martin. Martin and his family reside on a massive plot of land, ensuring plenty of privacy for visiting guests. The area boasts only four igloos, strategically placed at a distance from one another in carefully selected spots along the shore.

A castle garden topped with a polo club

We loaded ourselves and our luggage onto Martin’s UTV and were transported to our intimate destination. The entire area is a more than 1,000-year-old meadow that once belonged to the nearby convent and castle, constructed almost as long ago. Guests have the opportunity to explore the nearby castle, now transformed into a museum and petting zoo. Consequently, the surroundings exude the ambiance of a castle garden, which is further emphasized by the presence of the Blommerod Polo Club, hosting outdoor matches during the summer months. If you take a stroll on the grounds, you might encounter the family’s numerous horses.

The quiet rain on the roof will make you forget your everyday hustle

Upon arrival we settled our accommodation. Although mentally unplugged from the world, the igloo is far from rustique, with connected WIFI, plugs for charging, a dry flush toilet, electronic heating, a working kitchen complete with running water and a gas stove.

On this night however, we did not not have to prepare dinner in a well-equipped kitchen, as our host had kindly supplied us with a plate of delicious tapas upon a pre-order.

We tucked into bed and a tranquil patter of rain on the roof had the power to dissolve all the stresses of my daily routine. After reading in bed, I was lulled to sleep and slept better in the comfortable bed than I had in a long time.

This breakfast in bed will top almost every other and don’t get me started on the coffee!

The next day we woke up to a delivery of breakfast right to our doorstep (which I could quickly get used to.) In a basket we found carefully packed yogurt, fruit, granola, two perfectly soft-boiled eggs, bread, cheese, butter and a bottle of orange juice and one with milk. The final ingredient was a thermos of steaming hot coffee, and I promise I don’t exaggerate, when I say it was some of the best coffee I’ve had in my life. It also helped that this beautiful breakfast was enjoyed in our warm bed with a stunning view of the misty lake.

A stroll through the water (with no wet feet)

After breakfast, we decided to try our hand at fly fishing. On our way to the retreat, my husband had wisely purchased a pair of rubber boots, which proved to be quite useful. If waders aren’t your style, don’t worry. During the summer season, you can also explore the lake using the igloo’s rowing boat. Just be sure to check in with your host about whether you’ll need a fishing license before heading out. While we didn’t catch anything, fly fishing is always a soothing activity—a moment to relax and admire the tranquil lake reflecting the sky above.

Following our fishing excursion, we opted for a hike through a nearby nature sanctuary recommended by our host. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or simply prefer a casual stroll, the area offers numerous trails suitable for various activity levels. Midway through our hike, we paused by a cozy fireside to enjoy a packed lunch. There’s nothing eating in nature, everything just tastes better.

Burgers, s’mores, and comfy blankets

For dinner, we were treated to another mouthwatering food delivery—a package containing all the ingredients for homemade burgers. The igloo features an outdoor seating area and a barbecue, making it perfect for cooking during the long, light Nordic nights.

We ate until we were full and then some, but still managed to save a bit of room for dessert (isn’t that always the case?). We had brought crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows from home and took advantage of the crackling heat from the barbeque to make s’mores. Wrapped up in warm clothes and blankets, we savored our glamping dessert as the night grew quiet and the dew settled on the trees and grass.

Every season is worth a visit, so we will be back

Sometimes it is vital that we find time for a break, before the break finds us. Our recent getaway provided the perfect opportunity for much-needed rest and self-care. Spring is magical in this area, when the softness of the sunlight will make everything fresh and hopeful. However, I would absolutely love to return again in a couple of months and visit in the summer season, paddleboarding on the lake, going for picnics on the grass and experiencing a local polo match. Here every season brings its own form of wonder.
